One of my favorite things about being a girl is fashion and the ability to play, explore, and express myself through my own personal style. When you work a 9-5 it's not always the case that you have the freedom to portray that expression, but I am lucky enough to have one that does. I absolutely adore work chic looks and will probably have many more posts dedicated to the topic. From tunics to blazers, pencil skirts to slacks, the "dress it up dress it down" thought process happens with me all the time when figuring out what I can wear out of my closet in the office. But always remember, whether we like it or not, the way we look in the workplace can play a very big role in our success. Different work places have different dress codes but I've always lived by these 5 simple rules when deciding what to wear to work:
1. Keeping it conservative is a good rule to live by if you're not sure if something is appropriate. If you've put on that skirt you bought to go out with the girls last Friday and thought you could try it with a tunic top but are still questioning the length, it's probably too short. More often then not if you have a gut feeling that it's probably going to get attention, and not the good kind, then I would leave that for girls night only.
2. It is best to balance the skin that's shown. If you plan on wearing something sleeveless, pair it with slacks, or a dressy maxi skirt. If you plan on wearing that fitted pencil skirt, pair it with a 3/4 or long sleeve blouse. Too much skin showing in the workplace is a fashion faux pas in my opinion so keep it classy and balanced.
3. Always make sure your hair is presentable. If you're like me, you're not exactly a morning person, and sometimes 7:30 AM roles around a little too soon which means "Nicki you better leave to make it to work on time." Too many times I've woken up a little too late to get all of my hair done, so if you're like me and have a head full of thick takes-forever-to-blow-dry hair, make sure you have an easy back up plan if you're stuck with wet hair but have to leave for work. For me it's the classic bun with some dried pieces of hair framing my face, but I make sure it's a clean, conservative bun, and not a messy omg-I'm-late looking bun. If you don't know how to do a clean bun they're super easy, just look it up on youtube and practice!
4. Your bag says a lot about you as well. I know some of you may be thinking, "What does my bag have to do with anything? It's my purse, I like my bag" but what some may not realize is how particular some work places can be about appearance so it's always good to know simplicity can go a long way. If you have a bag or briefcase that does not have a zipper, make sure the contents of the bag are clean and nothing is jutting out. It's best to have a bag that closes, that way if your boss is sitting next to your bag, he/she will admire it's adorable leather and color rather then think about how you need to clean it and why is she carrying so many breath mints and dry shampoo??
5. Make sure the shoes you wear to work are in good condition, as in polished, no scuffs, and definitely no tears or holes. Sometimes the first thing an employer notices are your shoes so I say in the work place keep it simple and closed toed, but if you plan to wear open toed you better be sure your pedicure is fresh. Don't wear a heel that's too high because you may look silly walking in them at the end of the day and can also make your boss realize you didn't think things through when you chose those shoes. No matter how cute they are, unless you are very confident when wearing them and they are comfortable enough to wear all day, leave them for girls night.
So there you have it. Just a few tips from me and my take for fashion in the work place. Not necessarily rules to live by, but they're my "workplace fashion golden rules." The outfit feature on this post was one I put together from some separate pieces I had in my closet. My workplace is very business casual so although I do not wear jeans to work, I don't necessarily have to wear a suit so I can play around a little more. This is actually a casual cotton dress from Express, layered with the "Irma" top from Lularoe and nude wedges from Express. My jewels are Stella and Dot and I.N.C. International Concepts, and match back perfectly with the turquoise pops of color in my top. I completed this look with my mini messenger bag and pouf from Kate Spade that tied in all the different colors of the top. Although after wearing the dress after a little while I realized it may be a little too short for my comfort for the workplace, I liked the combination and did get a lot of compliments on it so I still consider it a workplace fashion win. :)
